Kelvin Lee is a composer, orchestrator and music producer based in Los Angeles. He writes and prepares music for film, television, theatre, dance and live performance, and works with clients in the United States and Hong Kong.

He holds a Master’s degree in Music Composition for the Screen from Columbia College Chicago, and a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Music Composition and Electronic Music from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. His graduate study was supported by the CASH Music Scholarship for Overseas Studies 2021/22.

Working background

From 2016 to 2021 Kelvin worked as a composer, arranger and orchestrator at Inter Music Production in Hong Kong, composing and producing music for media, arranging from sketches and melodies, orchestrating from MIDI, and preparing notation for rehearsals, recording sessions and concerts.

His live work includes assisting the music director on the RubberBand “Ciao” concert in Hong Kong, where he transcribed and prepared parts for harmony singers, coordinated rehearsals with the musicians and worked as copyist. He has also worked as a copyist for a 12-piece big band.

Alongside production work, Kelvin has taught. He founded and taught an electronic orchestral and composition course at CUHK FAA Thomas Cheung School, and taught music production at Baron School of Music.

How he works

Kelvin’s work sits between the writing and the recording. He is as comfortable with a director’s temp track as with a conductor’s score, and much of his work is making sure that the music on paper is the music the players can perform. That is why score preparation and Sibelius library work are a core part of the studio, not an afterthought.

Tools: Sibelius, Finale, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Cubase and Ableton Live.
